Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify social support, self-esteem, and social adjustment of the mentally disabled living in residential facilities compared to those living at home.

Methods: Data was collected from 64 mentally disabled living at residential facilities and 63 mentally disabled living at home from December 10, 2006 to January 30, 2007 by using the survey instruments.

Results: The study showed social support, self-esteem, and social adjustment of mentally disabled living at residential facilities were higher than those living at home (p=.001, .03, and .002, respectively). Social support had a positive relationship with self-esteem (r=.40, p<.001), and social support had a positive relationship with social adjustment (r=.45, p<.001).

Conclusion: This study suggests that mentally disabled persons need to live at residential facilities and take a programme of psychiatric social rehabilitation. Meanwhile, an increase in residential facilities is needed.
